Freeware and Free Software

So many people still assumed that freeware and free software, but there are the difference between both of them. Software consists of proprietary, shareware, and freeware. So, these three kinds of software can be free software, but they can’t be freeware.

Freeware, or also called by Free Open Source Software (FOSS), is free license and purpose right software. We can freely use, hand around, or install without break the law, just for right purpose. In this case, Linux is open source operating system, where we can use, get and change its source code, pass around, install, without buy the license.

Shareware refferer to trial public software in several time, then if original software wouldn’t bought, validity period will end. And proprietary, we can’t use it without buy it.

Whereas free software is a software that we get it without pay out, it can be borrow or asked to some friend, and the other reason.

In this case, the difference between freeware and free software is. Freeware like Linux OS and the other open source can’t be free if we have to buy to get it. For example, I have Ubuntu 8.04 CD that I buy for Rp10.000, or Ubuntu 8.10 Muslim Edition DVD for Rp15.000, but to purpose right and the license equally to more expensive original Microsoft Windows. The other example, automatically Linux’s Open Office integrated, equally to more expensive Microsoft Office for the license.

If the Windows and Office have got from friends without pay out, so this is free software, except your friend asked pay from you for your borrow.
